CNBC: How are you feeling about investing in the US these days?

John Zhao: Well, Hony Capital focuses on Chinese economy. We invested in a number of US companies like WeWork, STX, simply because we thought they would be great in China. So we help these companies, since we invested in them, to develop their Chinese business. And that’s going great. We will continue to do that. Listen…We think that the last round of globalization has produced a lot of benefits , while some reginal problems. One of the benefits is, you know, the efficiency that is interdependent. This became very, very apparent when we wanted to, you know, separate. It’s really not that easy. But then you do the benefits and the drawbacks, benefits outweigh drawbacks a lot. So we need to focus on the problems, like getting the distribution of the benefits more balanced. But I think interdependency is the keyword going forward.

CNBC:It just seems that there are more walls being put up by different countries. And in that kind of environment, for example, when I was asking about the US, do you feel that Chinese capital is getting scared away from investing in the United States because there is a bit of weariness?

John Zhao: In the short term, yes. When you are not welcoming investments, investors are not coming. This is true for U.S., this is true anywhere including China. It's funny you mentioned the word “wall”. China is known for its Great Wall but that’s 2500 years ago, and it didn’t do anything, or separate anything. Today there are attempts to do separation, Brexit, the U.S.-Mexico border wall. You noticed that when people wanted to this, calling it a “reverse of globalization”, it’s really actually hard to do. Even the people supporting the separation, once they get to it, on balance, they actually found “wow, see there’s more truth in this”. That’s what I meant when I said focusing on the problems of the last round of the development is the right approach, solving them I believe would call for more collaboration. The US-China trade talk is like that, I just said, and I think about after half a year of sort of war, like fighting, tit for tat. We are now genuinely expecting there will be some kind of agreements leading to more conversation, solving more problems in the future. That’s the way to do it I think.
